Sustainability of Halibut
In Alaska, protecting the future of both the environment and halibut stocks takes priority over opportunities for commercial harvesting. The management of halibut in Alaska is a collaborative process, in which the IPHC assesses stocks and sets catch limits annually. From these catch limits, the NPFMC allocates quota to fishermen. For almost 100 years, the IPHC has set sustainable catch limits to ensure that wild Alaskan halibut are available in Alaska for generations to come.
